Recently while I was training a member she asked me out of the blue “Why did you set up UR and why do you do what you do?”
I thought this was a bit of a deep, probing question but it turned out she had just started a programme of executive coaching herself and was doing lots of work on her own life in terms of vision, values, mission, goals etc to help her set a course for the next phase of her career. This was a period of self reflection and analysis for her, hence she asked me the question possibly to get some context or perspective for her own ‘homework’.
At the time, I said something like ‘Well, there’s lots of reasons really that go quite deep and probably too much to go into with a quick few second answer’ as we were stretching off towards the end of the session. On 28th October 2017 Unique Results will be one of 120 locations worldwide hosting the Strongfirst Tactical Strength Challenge (or TSC).
We will be encouraging a number of our own members to register as well as welcoming others from surrounding areas who can sign up to complete the challenge at our venue. The event will take place from 2pm onwards when the studio will be finished with our regular classes and sessions. Afterwards, we are planning on a couple of drinks and some food in a local pub/restaurant TBC.
Registration is $30 and includes a FREE TSC T-shirt when registering before 15th August.
The Tactical Strength Challenge (TSC) is a strength challenge consisting of three events: a three-attempt powerlifting deadlift (for a 1RM), one set of pull-ups for max reps (or a flexed arm hang for certain categories), and kettlebell snatches for max reps in a 5:00 time period (weights vary depending on category entered). Over the last couple of weeks I have been sharing on social media some of the delicious (and healthy) food I have been eating – in the interest of full disclosure most of it has been prepared and cooked by my wife Steph who has herself lost 24lb in the last 12 weeks since having our daughter Bella 7 months ago.
I stepped on the scales myself for the first time since the end of October this week and was 9lbs lighter than I was then. I believe this is due to a combination of the very healthy eating and the 10,000 Kettlebell swing challenge we did in December & the 2017 swing marathon we did on New Years Day. Anyway, the truth is, I wasn’t consciously trying to lose weight it just happened as a by-product of the food I have been eating and training I’ve been doing (which is kind of how it should be).
I have been asked by a number of members to share the recipe for a certain meal that was a real hit and very delicious indeed – the Sweet Potato Based Quiche. So as requested, here is the recipe along with some step by step photos and you never know a video may follow in the near future as well!

Well, its ‘that’ time of year again! From mid October nowadays we are steadily subtly & not so subtly fed images, adverts and articles relating to Christmas and what has become known as the ‘festive season’.
I absolutely LOVE Christmas but can also acknowledge that it can be a minefield for those of us who are somewhat conscious of our weight, waistline and physical appearance. If we are not careful Christmas can become an orgy of eating, drinking and partying that can take until March to recover from!

One of my favourite sayings is:
“You can do anything, but you can’t do everything”
I have lived this a lot in the last year with my own training and the need to be selective and purposeful with how I choose to spend my valuable time. It would be brilliant to do a little bit of everything but in reality that leads to being not particularly good at anything.
During a team meeting last week it was raised that we feel a number of our members maybe ‘overdoing it’ with their training recently. This is in relation specifically to the number of classes members are attending per week, sometimes up to 3 or 4 in one day and I feel I have a duty of care to raise this topic to the whole community (and anyone else who happens to be reading).

I thought I’d pen some words about a recent, and probably by now, well known experience.
As you may know, I was fortunate enough to be placed on a recent Kettlebell Certification Course held here at Unique Results. A course taught by Mark & Tracy Reifkind from the USA. Both extremely knowledgable, professional and passionate about Kettlebell training.
Now, the outcome sadly didn’t go quite according to plan. I won’t bore you with the details as many of you already know them.
As I walked out of the course (and I’ll be brutally honest, I did exactly that. I walked out) my immediate reaction was “I’ve failed in a big way”, “I’ve let people down who put their trust in me” I didn’t want to be there, it wasn’t going well and all I could think of was watching my son play football. Bud Jeffries is a strength coach, author, motivational speaker, minister, business owner and one of only a handful of professional performing strongman on tour in the US. His anti-bullying assembly is one of the most popular in the US, now starting his 4th year on tour and having spoken to over 300,000 students in that time. Bud averages 10 shows per week, every week, during the calendar school year, only having off Thanksgiving and Christmas (winter) break. This is a rigorous schedule that no other performing strongman in the US is currently showing.
In this blog I wanted to share with you some content Bud sent out recently. He’s a pretty unconventional guy and he does all his training outside on his farm in barefoot. He is incredibly intelligent, well read and passionate about spreading the message of health and strength.

I have been very fortunate to spend 3 weeks recently on vacation in Mauritius. It’s the fifth time in my life I’ve managed to get a full 3 week vacation and it’s something that I’m now making an annual goal for me and my family.
There’s something that happens in my mind and body when I’m away for 3 weeks which I believe is called relaxing. It becomes less like a holiday and more like just living somewhere else, but without going to work.
Now, I realise when you’re on holiday you’re living within a bubble. No work (even when you love what you do) frees up a huge amount of time – in my case probably 60+ hours a week and that allows lots of things that aren’t always practical in a normal working week. Nether the less there are certain things that I’ve been doing over these 3 weeks that I am going to endeavour to continue on my return back into ‘normal’ life. How we look, or how we perceive ourselves to look is aesthetic in nature. Aesthetics is:
“the study of sensory or sensory-emotional values, sometimes called judgments of sentiment and taste.” (Wikipedia, 2009)
Which is to say – it’s subjective. Everyone has different judgments on human appearance, and finding the ideal of human physical beauty is a job best left to artists, not trainers. Each person who embarks on physical training (as opposed to sport training) may have a certain goal or ‘image’ they are striving for initially, that may change over time. We all like to train well, and we all like to see, and benefit from the results of our training. But how do you progress to ultimately see the results. This of course comes back to the form, or technique of the exercise (as previously touched upon in my previous blog).
How do we define progression? Do you simply lift a heavier weight each time you step into the gym, add more reps to an exercise each week, run faster or further every time the running shoes are donned!
This of course can be done, by anyone and, will no doubt work for most. But how about taking a step back, to take two steps forward?!!
